HOME TUTORINGSome cancer and cancer treatments can leave a child unable to attend school on a regular basis. If this is the case with your child, you may wish to consider home tutoring as a way for your child to keep up to date with his or her schoolwork during these absences. There are other reasons why home tutoring may be important, aside from not falling behind in school. Doing the same lessons and activities as classmates will emphasize to your child that he or she is doing the same things other students are doing. Schoolwork may also help your child take his or her mind off of the illness and focus on returning to school and a normal routine. For all of these reasons, home tutoring can make it easier for your child when he or she returns to school and resumes lessons. If you are considering home tutoring for your child, the school system may be able to provide a tutor for you. Check with the principal of your child's school to see what services are available. You may also be able to work with your child's cancer treatment team to locate and coordinate home tutoring services. School liaisons or social workers with experience in cancer care issues may be able to contact the school to arrange for homework and tutoring services. Home tutoring can be an important part of your child's recuperation from treatment. As your child continues to get stronger and healthier, he or she may soon be ready to return to school for part or all of the day. Returning to school as soon as possible is important for many reasons. If you choose home tutoring for your child, try to view it as a short-term solution.
